As part of the CSR Programs under ICS Maldives, we have been conducting ‘The Cleaning Quest’, an event dedicated to cleaning beaches and the ocean of local Maldivian Islands, with the purpose of creating environmental awareness and promoting sustainable tourism in the Maldives. Initiated in 2017, ICS had successfully carried out 3 Cleaning Quest events. These were held in Baa Dharavandhoo, Alif Alif Rasdhoo, and Kaafu Dhiffushi, collecting and recycling over 400 kgs of plastics.
Zero Plastic Run, organized by ICS Maldives in partnership with The Cleaning Quest is the first of its kind in the Maldives.
This is an event where participants a run / walk to bring more attention to, and to create additional awareness, about the negative environmental impacts caused by plastics. The main aim of the “Zero Plastic Run” is to advocate for the banning or minimizing of the use of the everyday plastics which harm the environment, and especially the precious marine life. Our call is for the use of zero plastics in our daily life. We recognize that this goal cannot be achieved overnight. However, we believe that it is very important for everyone to make a start and stay on this very important journey to zero plastics.
The event will be a 5km run/walk that is set to take place on the 1st of February 2019 in Hulhumale’, and will be open to people of all age groups and to companies / organisations. Participants will run/walk for approximately 30-60 minutes, a distance of 5kms in a looped course. There will be water stations placed throughout the course to help keep the participants hydrated. These stations will serve water without the use of any single-use plastics.
The entire event will also be carried out without the use of harmful single-use plastics. After the run, the participants will be invited to take a pledge to support Zero Plastic by palm-printing on a banner placed at the Zero Plastic Run Finish Line.
